Changing Server Size & Cost
You can change a server's size at any time. Resizing affects the hourly rate, and how it's billed depends on whether you're scaling up or down.
Upscaling (to a larger size)
When you move to a larger size with a higher hourly rate:
- You're charged the difference for the rest of the current hour (a prorated top-up to the higher rate).
- The hourly timer resets so the next full hour is charged at the new rate.
- The change is rejected if your balance can't cover the prorated charge — top up first, then try again.
Downscaling (to a smaller size)
When you move to a smaller size with a lower hourly rate:
- It's free — there's no extra charge to scale down.
- Your existing paid time is kept (the timer is not reset).
- Future hours simply charge the new, lower rate.
Where to resize
Resize from the Server Settings blade on a server's instance page — see Server Settings. You'll always see the new hourly rate before you confirm.
Why upscaling resets the timer
Upscaling effectively buys you the bigger machine for the upcoming hour, so the meter restarts at the new rate. Downscaling doesn't cost anything extra, so there's no reason to reset it.
Both directions show you the cost impact before you confirm, so there are no surprises.
